Silica gel is said to be the best desiccant when it comes at absorbing moisture. Removing moisture from unnecessary places is very necessary as even a drop of it can become a reason for big loss. Silica gel is also of two types indicating and non-indicating. White silica gel comes under the category of non-indicating category where blue and orange are the indicating ones.
silica gel desiccants
Silica gel desiccant is used in various industries to keep the products environment dry and moisture free pharmaceuticals, food, electronics, textile, stationery, agriculture, leather, air, gas and many more. Apart from controlling moisture it is also used for the removal of air, gas and water. Once the product starts to react with moisture, (specially the consumable goods) it starts to lose its originality and effectiveness. By protecting it against moisture it is possible to avoid spoilage and growth of fungi, mold, bacteria and other micro-organisms which inhibits in moisture condition. So, using silica gel can increase the shelf life of the products and keep them fresh for a long term.

Packaged food is the most common type of food that we consume today. Due to the fast paced lifestyle that we follow, storing food has become the only option for us. Storing food can be difficult as there are many problems involved in storing eatables. One of the main problems is spoiling of the food articles due to moisture. The presence of moisture will promote the growth of fungus mold, mildew and bacteria on food items. In order to prevent this, some particular desiccants are used to suck up the moisture and create a dry atmosphere inside the packages. There are many types of desiccants available in the market, but one of the safest and commonly used desiccants is silica gel.
Silica gel is a hygroscopic and can absorb moisture up to 40% of its weight. It is an USFDA approved, non-toxic, DMF Free, organic desiccant. Silica gel is hard, irregular and in the shape of granules or beads. It has a high ability to desiccate. As it exhibits a lower vapor pressure than the surrounding air, water molecules adhere to the gels surface. Standard white silica gel is non-indicating as remains physically unchanged even when it adsorbs moisture. Non-indicating silica gel is cheap and effective, available in bulk packs sachets. Size of Beads is 2-5mm, 3-5mm and 4-8mm.

Some of the characteristic trains of this desiccant are that they are absolutely to use as they are USFDA Approved and are safe to use with food items, as are absolutely non-toxic. It makes the environment moisture free. These desiccants are DMF free and easily qualify all the food and pharmaceutical grade. There are many companies who silica gel sachets manufacture. Although, these sachets are available in many sizes but one standard size of these packets ranges from 1 gm. to 25 gm.
By absorbing moisture, these desiccants protects against many problems like fungus, bacteria, humidity and spoilage. Some of the desiccants not only protect against moisture but they also absorb odor. Many of the times these desiccants are used all on its own and sometimes in combination with other desiccants. These desiccants mostly come in granular or powdered or in capsule form. That is because in this form the surface area for absorption increases. You can find the use of silica gel pouches at mostly all small and big places.

Silica Gel Orange Granular
Among all the silica gel granular, the best one which is considered by most of the industrialist is silica gel orange beads. In this type of silica gel molecules impregnated is naturally an organic indicator. Also this type of silica gel granular has high absorption capacity. It is said that it has the capacity to absorb moisture almost 40% of its weight. Once the granular are fully contaminated it turns from orange to light orange then light green and then finally dark green indicating that it is fully contaminated. It is available in various sizes ranging from 2-5mm, 3-5mm and 4-8mm. It is used for various purposes like drying and storage of flowers and seeds, optical instruments and other devices and drying of analytical samples and solvents. It is also the best replacement of blue silica material which was widely used in breather transformers. Apart from this it is the best solution to protect electronic and communication devices.
silica gel granular
Silica gel is basically a composition of silicon dioxide in amorphous form. So, it produces small and hard irregular beads or granular which look like crystals. It helps in absorbing moisture or odor. The absorption is possible because of the micro pores present in its structure. It not only absorbs the moisture but its interlocking feature locks them inside which results in change of shape and color of the granular. Moisture is easily absorbed in the granular because it possesses lower vacuum pressure than the surrounding air. Absorption stops when the level of pressure inside the granular as well as outside is equal. Silica gel is available in two types, one is indicating and the other is non-indicating. Under the indicating category comes orange and blue silica gel and white is the non-indicating type. By indicating silica gel it means that the granular changes its color after they fully saturates.

The best thing to use silica as desiccant is that it can be reused even after it is fully contaminated by heating it over certain temperature. One drawback that these desiccants have is that it cannot be used loosely. Usually it is used by packing them in small packets. But what about huge containers? In that situation huge silica gel Canisters are used.
desiccant canisters
Whenever you are making for desiccants always choose those which have successfully undergone the FDA standards. This makes it safe that they can be used in close contact with drugs or food items. But still in any case a basic layer is required. In the canisters you have the advantage to use a single desiccant individually or you also have the option to use it in combination with some other desiccant. Like silica gel and activated carbon can be used in combination where silica gel is best in absorbing moisture and activated carbon is used to absorb odor. These canisters are available in various sizes. Advantage of using these canisters is that it can be customized according to the requirement. It is absolutely safe to use desiccant canisters as it has welded ends which provide more structural strength. And those welded ends have the capacity to stay sealed even in extreme pressure.

Among all the moisture absorbing techniques, Silica gel is said to be the most efficient and the best way to absorb the unwanted humidity. Humidity is the biggest enemy against the quality of a good product. So in order to retain the quality the best way, silica gel beads should be used. They are available in 3 variants - White, blue and orange. Among the three, Silica gel blue bead and orange bead are the indicating type silica gel. Industrial people mostly use the blue one. It is used in various industries like food and packaging, Pharmaceutical, lather and also in gas industry. This blue bead will initially turn to pink when it is fully absorbed with moisture. Another reason for them being used in such huge quantity is that they are absolutely non-toxic and environmental friendly.
Now-a-days, this gel is also being used in the transformer breathers. Usually when Blue silica gel for breather is used, it provides an efficient and an effective way to control the level of moisture content in the electric equipment. As when the equipment changes its temperature from cool to hot or vice versa it creates a huge amount of humidity in the environment. This needs heavy breathers to clean the nearby environment and to continue the working of the equipment. There are many companies across the world which supplies Silica gel transformers up to the capacity of 2000Kva.

Silica gel for breathers is basically transparent hollow cylinders which have tubes and it contains silicon salt which is also called as silica gel. It consists of cobalt which works as indicator. The body and the oil cup of the breathers are made up of transparent and unbreakable polycarbonate plastic and is also UV protected. Many of the breathers also have gel removing plus refining method which aims to reduce the labor and also avoids air leakage. Breathing actually happens within the transformers which is the act of contraction and expansion of the oil masses within it.

We always wonder about the usefulness of silica gel packets that come along with the packaging of the things that we buy. These little packaging of these gels are very helpful and is responsible for the successful packaging of the commodities. With the advancement of the technology in the development of silica gel, self-indicating silica gels are now becoming increasingly popular. They are basically of two types, silica gel blue and silica gel orange. These gels are mainly responsible for the absorption of moisture and are kept in small packets. These are granular substances that are made from a chemical substance called silicon silicate. These are made basically by synthetic processes. The end result is translucent, hard granules.

These are basically silica gel that is amorphous and is made into irregular granules that look like beads. These silica gel beads have micro-porous structure that has interlocking cavity that results in high surface area. These self-indicating gels are basically the same as normal indicators but with only the exception that in these gels, chemical or organic components are added that are sensitive to moisture. These chemicals react differently to the different levels of moisture. Their reaction is shown by their color change.  Low vapor density is responsible for the fact that water is able to stay on the surface of the beads. The process of adsorption by these beads gets stopped when the state of equilibrium is attained. This state is basically attained when the vapor pressure of the surface and the surroundings gets equal.

These are used in the industries where excess moisture can cause damage to the goods. The most basic use is for the drying and cleaning of the air and gases. These beads find great use in any kind of a dehumidification process. Silica beads are also used in the drying of analytical sample as they don’t participate in any type of a chemical reaction. They are also used to protect the sensitive optical instruments and lenses from damage caused due to humidity.

Advantages of using silica gel as a desiccant
    • Silica gel is non-flammable, non-toxic, non-corrosive and odorless.
    • It can be reused by regenerating and has a very high lifetime, if stored air-tight. Heating the gel would remove the absorbed fluid and thus it can be reused.
    • It can absorb about 40% of its own weight.
    • It is inert to other materials.
    • The absorption capacity is 35% higher than that of other clay desiccants.
    • It can be packed in varying sizes for different applications.
    • When it comes to weight and efficiency, silica gel is a better choice than other desiccant.
    • The physical features of the product do not change on absorbing the fluid. In some cases, the beads are made to turn to another color, to indicate the presence of fluid.

Silica Gel is one of the most used adsorbent in the dehumidification process. Desiccant Silica Gel will absorb the moisture present in the ambient air and will bring down the humidity level accordingly. Whatever the application is house hold or commercial silica gel desiccant is used widely to dehumidify the air. For absorption of moisture indicating type silica gel which and non-indicating type silica gel are used. Also these both types are available to different forms: Silica Gel beads and Silica Gel Crystals. Silica Gel Blue containing indicator cobalt (II) chloride which after hydration turns to pink and after regeneration retains its basic color blue. Similarly for Silica Gel Orange containing indicator methyl violet and few a times phenolphthalein after absorbing moisture turns to green. Whereas in case of Silica Gel White it retains the same color even after adsorption because it does not contain any moisture indicator. Main process is of absorbing water that is present in form of moisture in the air and do an effective job.
Differentiation is as for the indicating types once it is in dry form contains the basic color and once it is saturated will change its color which is an indication that it’s time for the replacement. For

Silica gel is form of silicon dioxide made unnaturally from sodium silicate. Silica gel is solid and tough; it is harder than common household gels like gelatin. As a desiccant, it has an average pore size.  Normally silica gel is used in small beads paper packet. In this form, it is used as a desiccant to control humidity of belongings.

Electronic goods and devices have faced many problems from humidity, silica packets will help a lot for absorbing humidity from them. Silica gel packets are controlling moisture by temperature.  Silica also used for leather items to avoid fungous growth. For many reasons will be highlighted with the warning of “DO NOT EAT”.  It is believed that silica crystals can cause frustration to the human body and cause various side effects in human. Because of this reason it is advised to keep away from children.

Basically silica gel is porous sand. Silica gel is containing 40% absorption of moisture regarding its weight. You can also reuse silica gel pouches once wet has dried off; reheating them on 300 degrees makes them reusable. There are many companies who manufacturer and suppliers of silica gel packets, pouches. Basically industries are purchase silica gel packets in bulk order for getting good discounts. You can get price list from internet also, or you can also fill up inquiries page on website and get brief detail of it. like sorbeadindia is one of the reputed company for purchasing silica gel.
