Desiccant like Silica gel cannot be used loosely. It has to be packed in form of packets. Now, the sizes of the packets differ from time to time. According to the requirement these silica gel packets are given shape and size. Like, when you purchase a leather jacket you must have seen a small packet somewhere in its pocket. That is a desiccant packet which is put in to absorb that pungent odor obtained from the jacket. This was all about small packets, but what about places like big electronic factories where sudden heating and cooling produces huge amount of moisture. That much moisture is sufficient to promote corrosion or rusting activity. So, at such places huge places breather transformers are used.

Silica gel being the ideal desiccant among all the other desiccants is the best product to be used as an absorbent in these breathers. Breather transformers are the best tool which provides an efficient and an economic way to control the level of moisture which enters the electronic equipment. Breathers are available in various quantities but people usually use then up to the capacity of 2000 Kva.

Silica Gel Beads
Among all the desiccants, silica gel is rated as the best one.  It is basically amorphous form of silicon dioxide. These are hard irregular beads which has high capacity surface area to not only absorb water molecules but also lock it inside them. It is available in three variants that is blue, white and orange.  Among them Blue and orange are the indicating types. It changes its color to indicate that they are fully contaminated and are now ready to be replaced with the fresh ones. Also these beads should never be used in direct contact with any food or pharmaceutical product. The best thing about the gel is that once it is fully contaminated it can be reused by heating it over 300oF. The heating process brings the silica gel beads to its original face.

Silica gel is an important desiccant which holds water particles which are trapped inside the storage boxes. Silica gel is a very important product for those devices and products which can even produce thumb size moisture droplets, which can highly disrupt the functioning of the device.

Moisture is always an unnecessary content which can sometimes even create havoc as it is the reason for the promotion of fungi and mould. These micro-organisms are the cause of deteriorating quality of the product. So, in order to avoid the effects of moisture and keep the ambiance dry, many type of moisture adsorbing techniques are used like molecular sieves, activated carbon and silica gel. Among all three the most popular one is the silica gel. It is basically a granular, highly porous and a vitreous substance which is synthetically made from sodium silicate. Unlike its name silica gel, it is a solid substance. Silica gel is available in three variants that is orange, blue and white.
Talking about the white silica gel, it is a non- indicating variant while the orange and blue are the indicating gel types. Unlike the other variants of silica gel is not made up with the other types of indicating agents. It remains white when it is free from all kinds of moisture and particles. Impurity of this type of gel is judged when its whiteness turns a little milky or hazy. The best thing about this variant is that it always has the higher capacity to adsorb moisture as compared to the other variants. While the other variants that are, orange and blue keeps up the adsorbing capacity to adsorb up to 40 present of humidity of its weight in the environment of 100 present humidity. The molecular structure of a silica gel is very similar to that of a sponge, thus considered as the best solution for moisture adsorption. It is also used as a pharmaceutical dehydration agent who is used for bleaching of petroleum oils.
There are several Silica Gel Manufacturers who are manufacturing this desiccant in huge quantity. Huge amount of silica gel is supplied to many industries like refrigeration and storage industry, Leather manufacturing industry, cosmetics and gas industry. A major section of silica gel is supplied to the Food and storage industry because silica gel being a nontoxic desiccant can be conveniently used with food. With the help of this desiccant freshness and crispness of the food item can be retained. Moisture is the biggest enemy of electronic items, so manufacturers of electronic items and computer industry also utilizes this product.

Sorbead India is the leading silica gel suppliers in market. It is very necessary to first investigate a little before you make a selection for silica gel supply for your company. Among all the moisture absorbing techniques, Silica gel is said to be the most efficient and the best way to absorb the unwanted humidity. Humidity is the biggest enemy against the quality of a good product. So in order to retain the quality the best way, silica gel beads should be used. They are available in 3 variants - White, blue and orange. Among the three, Silica gel blue bead and orange bead are the indicating type silica gel. Industrial people mostly use the blue one. It is used in various industries like food and packaging, Pharmaceutical, lather and also in gas industry. This blue bead will initially turn to pink when it is fully absorbed with moisture. Another reason for them being used in such huge quantity is that they are absolutely non-toxic and environmental friendly.
Now-a-days, this gel is also being used in the transformer breathers. Usually when Blue silica gel for breather is used, it provides an efficient and an effective way to control the level of moisture content in the electric equipment. As when the equipment changes its temperature from cool to hot or vice versa it creates a huge amount of humidity in the environment. This needs heavy breathers to clean the nearby environment and to continue the working of the equipment. There are many companies across the world which supplies Silica gel transformers up to the capacity of 2000Kva.

Silica gel for breathers is basically transparent hollow cylinders which have tubes and it contains silicon salt which is also called as silica gel. It consists of cobalt which works as indicator. The body and the oil cup of the breathers are made up of transparent and unbreakable polycarbonate plastic and is also UV protected. Many of the breathers also have gel removing plus refining method which aims to reduce the labor and also avoids air leakage. Breathing actually happens within the transformers which is the act of contraction and expansion of the oil masses within it.

We always wonder about the usefulness of silica gel packets that come along with the packaging of the things that we buy. These little packaging of these gels are very helpful and is responsible for the successful packaging of the commodities. With the advancement of the technology in the development of silica gel, self-indicating silica gels are now becoming increasingly popular. They are basically of two types, silica gel blue and silica gel orange. These gels are mainly responsible for the absorption of moisture and are kept in small packets. These are granular substances that are made from a chemical substance called silicon silicate. These are made basically by synthetic processes. The end result is translucent, hard granules.

These are basically silica gel that is amorphous and is made into irregular granules that look like beads. These silica gel beads have micro-porous structure that has interlocking cavity that results in high surface area. These self-indicating gels are basically the same as normal indicators but with only the exception that in these gels, chemical or organic components are added that are sensitive to moisture. These chemicals react differently to the different levels of moisture. Their reaction is shown by their color change.  Low vapor density is responsible for the fact that water is able to stay on the surface of the beads. The process of adsorption by these beads gets stopped when the state of equilibrium is attained. This state is basically attained when the vapor pressure of the surface and the surroundings gets equal.

These are used in the industries where excess moisture can cause damage to the goods. The most basic use is for the drying and cleaning of the air and gases. These beads find great use in any kind of a dehumidification process. Silica beads are also used in the drying of analytical sample as they don’t participate in any type of a chemical reaction. They are also used to protect the sensitive optical instruments and lenses from damage caused due to humidity.

Silica gel desiccants are largely used in the Consumer products like Food, Leather, and Packaging to protect goods from Moisture Depreciation. Silica gel is one of the most widely used desiccant due to its exclusive property of Moisture adsorption, various sizes, shapes and saturation indicating properties that can cater to any application. They are packed in form of small bags, tiny cylinders or tablets which help the user fit it in any type of packaging making it more users friendly. These desiccants can be regenerated by applying heat for a specific time period which lets it retain its original properties making it re-usable.

Silica Gel Beads are spherical forms of silicon dioxide which are derived artificially from Sodium Silicate. Beads are in colored and transparent forms. They are available in various sizes ranging from 1 mm to 8mm. They adsorb relatively up to 40% moisture of their weight which makes it amongst the most favorable moisture adsorbing inert material that can be in free forms or enclosed in some packaged forms. Silica beads are used in air breathers.

Specifications of Usage

For one liter volume container, half gram of silica gel is required to keep it safe. Change in relative humidity can also affect the absorption capacity. If the relative humidity is 20%, then the gel can absorb 10% of its weight. If the relative humidity is 50% or 90%, then the gel can absorb about 23% or 36% of its weight respectively.

When it comes to using an easy desiccant which is weightless and can be reused, then silica gel is the right choice. It can be used in many industries. It is also available in different packing sizes, enabling it to be used in various packages. Some companies prefer colored gel to indicate the presence of humidity and some prefer silica gel white.

Advantages of using silica gel as a desiccant
    • Silica gel is non-flammable, non-toxic, non-corrosive and odorless.
    • It can be reused by regenerating and has a very high lifetime, if stored air-tight. Heating the gel would remove the absorbed fluid and thus it can be reused.
    • It can absorb about 40% of its own weight.
    • It is inert to other materials.
    • The absorption capacity is 35% higher than that of other clay desiccants.
    • It can be packed in varying sizes for different applications.
    • When it comes to weight and efficiency, silica gel is a better choice than other desiccant.
    • The physical features of the product do not change on absorbing the fluid. In some cases, the beads are made to turn to another color, to indicate the presence of fluid.
