Among all the desiccants, silica gel is rated as the best one. It is basically amorphous form of silicon dioxide. These are hard irregular beads which has high capacity surface area to not only absorb water molecules but also lock it inside them. It is available in three variants that is blue, white and orange. Among them Blue and orange are the indicating types. It changes its color to indicate that they are fully contaminated and are now ready to be replaced with the fresh ones. Also these beads should never be used in direct contact with any food or pharmaceutical product. The best thing about the gel is that once it is fully contaminated it can be reused by heating it over 300oF. The heating process brings the silica gel beads to its original face.

Silica Gel Orange Desiccant although cannot be used loosely so it is either used in packets or it can also be used in breather transformers. This technique is nowadays quite popular, as the breather’s works more efficiently than those packets. Breathers are said to be the economic and efficient way to control the level of moisture. It is usually used in factories where huge electrical equipment is used. Humidity in the nearby area increases due to the frequent cooling and heating process of the machines. The equipment needs to be protected from coming in contact with the moisture. The breather has aluminum body and is sealed from both the edges, so this prevents any type of leakage even at that moment when beads are fully contaminated. Its body has also some transparent but unbreakable UV proof polycarbonate plastic, which helps to know the current status of the silica beads.

Silica Desiccant is basically a granular gel which is a composition of sodium silicate made by the artificial decomposition of silicon dioxide. As the name says gel, but actually silica exists in the form of hard translucent granules that tends to swell up after absorbing certain percentage of humidity or water. As it is an amorphous substance and looks like crystals or beads it has micro-pours structure which has interlocking cavity providing enough surface area to adsorb moist air. This is the reason which makes Silica gel has the best technique to absorb humidity, thus making it the high capacity desiccant. In case the desiccant has reached the highest point where the molecule has no capacity left to adsorb humidity further it even has the feature to change its color. In this case silica gel molecules are of 3 types Orange, blue and white.
These colored silica gel granules are similar to that of the regular silica gel apart from that different colored granules have different capacity to adsorb moister. As soon as the granule has absorbed enough water it changes its color indicating that the silica gel beads needs to be replaced. Among all the beads silica gel orange is considered t have the best capacity to absorb moisture. It has the capacity to absorb 40 percent moisture of its weight. The best thing about these beads is that even if it has reached the level of saturation it can be reused by heating it over 300o F, this will remove all the moisture content form the bead.
Silica gels are also used in Breathers. There are many companies who are using these breathers for preserving their products. These breathers are mostly used by the power generating companies. Humidity is the biggest enemy of electronic products. So, the function of these silica gel breathers is to absorb all the moisture content which is sucked by those electronic transformers during their breathing process. During the breathing process of silica gel breathers, the air which comes in it is humid and has dirt. This air has to be purified in order to avoid any damage to the electronic items. So the silica gel breather absorbs moist air and ensures that only pure air is breathed out for the transformer. Initially the color of the silica gel beads will be blue but as it absorbs moisture its color will gradually turn to pink. Breathers also have a cup so that the dust particles can settle down in that cup.

Among all the moisture absorbing techniques, Silica gel is said to be the most efficient and the best way to absorb the unwanted humidity. Humidity is the biggest enemy against the quality of a good product. So in order to retain the quality the best way, silica gel beads should be used. They are available in 3 variants - White, blue and orange. Among the three, Silica gel blue bead and orange bead are the indicating type silica gel. Industrial people mostly use the blue one. It is used in various industries like food and packaging, Pharmaceutical, lather and also in gas industry. This blue bead will initially turn to pink when it is fully absorbed with moisture. Another reason for them being used in such huge quantity is that they are absolutely non-toxic and environmental friendly.
Now-a-days, this gel is also being used in the transformer breathers. Usually when Blue silica gel for breather is used, it provides an efficient and an effective way to control the level of moisture content in the electric equipment. As when the equipment changes its temperature from cool to hot or vice versa it creates a huge amount of humidity in the environment. This needs heavy breathers to clean the nearby environment and to continue the working of the equipment. There are many companies across the world which supplies Silica gel transformers up to the capacity of 2000Kva.
Silica gel for breathers is basically transparent hollow cylinders which have tubes and it contains silicon salt which is also called as silica gel. It consists of cobalt which works as indicator. The body and the oil cup of the breathers are made up of transparent and unbreakable polycarbonate plastic and is also UV protected. Many of the breathers also have gel removing plus refining method which aims to reduce the labor and also avoids air leakage. Breathing actually happens within the transformers which is the act of contraction and expansion of the oil masses within it.

For the starters, silica gel is a synthetic amorphous, porous or granulated product. It has a hard irregular bead crystal appearance. It is used for various applications in varying industries. It is created by the chemical reaction between Sodium Silicate and Sulphuric acid.

Advantages of using silica gel as a desiccant
- Silica gel is non-flammable, non-toxic, non-corrosive and odorless.
- It can be reused by regenerating and has a very high lifetime, if stored air-tight. Heating the gel would remove the absorbed fluid and thus it can be reused.
- It can absorb about 40% of its own weight.
- It is inert to other materials.
- The absorption capacity is 35% higher than that of other clay desiccants.
- It can be packed in varying sizes for different applications.
- When it comes to weight and efficiency, silica gel is a better choice than other desiccant.
- The physical features of the product do not change on absorbing the fluid. In some cases, the beads are made to turn to another color, to indicate the presence of fluid.

Silica Gel is one of the most used adsorbent in the dehumidification process. Desiccant Silica Gel will absorb the moisture present in the ambient air and will bring down the humidity level accordingly. Whatever the application is house hold or commercial silica gel desiccant is used widely to dehumidify the air. For absorption of moisture indicating type silica gel which and non-indicating type silica gel are used. Also these both types are available to different forms: Silica Gel beads and Silica Gel Crystals. Silica Gel Blue containing indicator cobalt (II) chloride which after hydration turns to pink and after regeneration retains its basic color blue. Similarly for Silica Gel Orange containing indicator methyl violet and few a times phenolphthalein after absorbing moisture turns to green. Whereas in case of Silica Gel White it retains the same color even after adsorption because it does not contain any moisture indicator. Main process is of absorbing water that is present in form of moisture in the air and do an effective job.

Silica gel is form of silicon dioxide made unnaturally from sodium silicate. Silica gel is solid and tough; it is harder than common household gels like gelatin. As a desiccant, it has an average pore size. Normally silica gel is used in small beads paper packet. In this form, it is used as a desiccant to control humidity of belongings.
Electronic goods and devices have faced many problems from humidity, silica packets will help a lot for absorbing humidity from them. Silica gel packets are controlling moisture by temperature. Silica also used for leather items to avoid fungous growth. For many reasons will be highlighted with the warning of “DO NOT EAT”. It is believed that silica crystals can cause frustration to the human body and cause various side effects in human. Because of this reason it is advised to keep away from children.
Basically silica gel is porous sand. Silica gel is containing 40% absorption of moisture regarding its weight. You can also reuse silica gel pouches once wet has dried off; reheating them on 300 degrees makes them reusable. There are many companies who manufacturer and suppliers of silica gel packets, pouches. Basically industries are purchase silica gel packets in bulk order for getting good discounts. You can get price list from internet also, or you can also fill up inquiries page on website and get brief detail of it. like sorbeadindia is one of the reputed company for purchasing silica gel.
